This 5 Blade Reel Lawn Mower Delivers Twice The Cutting Power
Last Updated on January 9, 2017 by Cassie Lyons
With the green movement, more and more people are looking for ways to save fuel and do things the old fashioned way. This Fiskars reel lawn mower is anything but old-fashioned, though it doesn’t require gas to power it. According to the company, the mower features blades that dull less quickly than they do on typical reel mowers because they don’t actually brush against one another. Plus, the ergonomic handle makes it much more comfortable to use than your great-grandma’s old mower. I like the idea of this type of mower, which gives you a bit of a workout but still, according to reviewers, doesn’t take forever to mow your lawn.
The majority of reviews I read were pretty positive, although this lawn mower is a little more limited than your standard riding mower. If you want to get out of the house and exercise (or make your teenaged kid get some exercise) this summer while saving money on a lawn mowing service or gas for your mower, this may be the reel lawn mower you’re looking for.
The Positives
According to most reviewers, this lawn mower is surprisingly easy to use. You’d think it would take a ton of muscle to push a mower with no motor, but as long as you have the blade set right and aren’t working with wet grass, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The push reel lawn mower is also comfortable to use, with the ergonomic handle design that adjusts for height so different people can use it comfortably. Several reviewers noted that on dry grass, it really does a surprisingly good job and that the blades stay sharp after a summers’ worth of uses.
If you want a super-clean-cut lawn, you might need to make two passes, but that’s the case even with most motorized mowers. While the blades can be a little difficult to adjust (an adjustment that only needs to take place every few months), adjusting the actual height of the mower only takes a few seconds – a definite plus since you might need to change height a few times during one mowing session.
The Negatives
Most reviewers noted that this Fiskars reel lawn mower didn’t cut down tall, stalky weeds, so they get left standing in your yard. It’s better to pull them out anyway, though, since they’ll just keep coming back if you don’t. Fiskars says that you shouldn’t use this on wet grass, and reviewers noted that in even mildly damp grass it was difficult to push and did a pretty poor job of cutting.
Some reviewers noted that it took too much time to maintain a yard, since you can’t let the grass get too high before a reel mower becomes pretty much useless. Others, though, said it was a breeze and mowed really quickly. I think it depends on your expectation.
So What’s The Scoop?
If you have a smaller yard that’s mostly flat, I would give this Fiskars push lawn mower a try. It’s got better reviews from some users than the Scott’s 20″ reel mower or the Brill RazorCut 38 manual lawn mower, and it’s an affordable option for a lawn mower. If you’re in a constantly wet climate or don’t have time to mow at least once or twice a week, you might opt for a motorized mower, though.
