Garmin Edge 500 Bike Computer Features A Highly Sensitivity GPS
Last Updated on August 1, 2018 by Cassie Lyons
Riding a bicycle isn’t an activity just for kids, but is in fact a great way for adults to get outside and get some good exercise. Those who take their cycling seriously enjoy knowing how far they’ve gone, how many calories they’ve burned, and other details about their exercise. Previously, the only ways to do this were to ride a stationary bike inside or punch the information manually into a computer program after your ride. Now you can enjoy a good ride outside while getting instant feedback on your exercise with the Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS. This Garmin bike computer is specially designed for use on bicycles and features a lightweight design.
The unit is capable of tracking your distance, speed, location and elevation courtesy of its highly-sensitive GPS. When teamed with a heart rate monitor, the Garmin is even capable of monitoring heart rates and tracking calories burned. There are a variety of GPS units available on the market these days, ranging from larger mounting units like this to smaller, wrist watch sized models. Choosing the one that is right for each individual will depend on their individual needs.
The Positives
This wireless bike GPS seamlessly tracks your distance, speed, location and elevation with a high-sensitivity GPS and the barometric altimeter pinpoints changes in elevation for precise climbs and descents. It also attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike with its low-profile bike mount. The monitor tracks heart beats per minute and uses your heart rate for calorie computation. Lastly you can connect the Garmin bike computer to your computer with the included USB cable to analyse your performance.
The Negatives
While most online reviewers were pleased with their Garmin Edge 500 bike computer, a handful of reviewers found a major problem with their unit. Several reviewers commented that their Edge unit would appear to track all their data during a ride, but none of the information was there to download when they got home. This happened to a number of users and is a crucial error in a system designed to provide information for analysis later on. Also there were a few online comments that the screen is difficult to read if you are not in direct sunlight.
So What’s The Scoop?
Although most users were quite happy with their purchase of the Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS, it is worth taking extra caution before spending a hefty chunk of change given multiple users experienced data loss on their units on several occasions. Taking it all into account though, it should be a solid purchase and aid you in your biking journeys.
